Foreign body in the eye
Often dirt, grit, or even small insects may fly into the eye and get lodged
inside. This causes intense discomfort along with watering and redness. The
most common site of lodgement is under the upper lid. Bathe the eye with clean
water. If the problem persists, look for the particle. A search for the
offending particle should include flipping the upper eyelid around. Foreign body
under the lid may be removed by pulling the upper lid down across the lower lid
and then releasing it gently. The corner of a clean folded handkerchief may also
be used to pick up the particle. If the problem persists, have the child
examined by an eye specialist.
