Penetrating Injuries
Sharp objects can penetrate the tough outer coat of the eye causing injury to
internal structures. Apart from internal injuries, the breach in the outer coats
of the eye, leaves the eye open to sight threatening infections. Children need
to be promptly assessed for eye injury and seen by an eye specialist to evaluate
the need for emergency surgery. Sharp items are not playthings. Children need to
be taught about the safe use of such objects. Pencils, pens and scissors should
be held with the sharp end away form the face and should be used for writing
only and returned to the box when not in use. Children must be taught that these
must never be pointed towards others, or be waved about during a conversation.
Pens with caps are safer and they must be sheathed when not in use. Children
must not threaten others with such instruments, even in jest.
